MAUI ROTARY TO HEAR DISCUSSION OF PRISON SYSTEM
A woman who has herself spent time in Hawaii prisons will talk to the Rotary Club of Maui on May 3 about how the prison system impacts the community. “I'm talking from a perspective that I know about,” said Danette Arrojo, who has been a volunteer for the Community Alliance on Prisons, a community initiative working on prison reform and criminal justice issues, since she was released four and a half years ago.
Arrojo will discuss prison reform, the proposed new jail in Puunene and Justice Reinvestment, a project of the Council of State Governments Justice Center. According to the Justice Reinvestment website, Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, Senate President Shan Tsutsui, House Speaker Calvin Say and Department of Public Safety Director Jodie Maesaka-Hirata seek to employ a data-driven justice reinvestment strategy to bring out-of-state prisoners back to Hawaii, reduce spending on corrections and reinvest savings generated in strategies that would reverse recent crime trends.
The Rotary Club of Maui meets at noon on Thursdays at the Class Act Restaurant at U.H. Maui College. The cost is $20. The public is welcome.
